Device and component ID tags
Tag every device to match the schematic: CR1, M1, F3, PS1, TB2. Small tags of 1/2 x 1-1/2 inches or 1 x 2 inches mount on the backplate next to each device. White on black and black on white are the most common, and many shops pick one and keep it across every panel they build.
Push button and pilot light legend plates (22 mm / 30 mm)
The builder has a push button mode with 22 mm and 30 mm legend plate sizes. Pick the size, enter one or two lines (START, STOP, E-STOP, HAND OFF AUTO) and choose a color. Emergency stop legends are usually yellow with black text, but follow your customer's standard. Set the hole size to match the operator.
Marking under UL 508A and NFPA 79
UL 508A covers how industrial control panels are built and marked, including the panel nameplate data such as manufacturer, supply voltage, full load current and short-circuit current rating. NFPA 79 adds requirements for industrial machinery. We engrave nameplates with whatever data your listing and drawings require.
One thing to be clear on: the UL listing mark comes from UL through your shop's listing, not from us. We make the identification tags, legend plates and nameplates. We do not supply UL labels.
Repeat orders and job files
Every order in the builder can be saved as a job file. When the same panel comes through again, open the file, change the serial or customer name, and send it. You can also keep a library of standard tags (E-STOP, MAIN DISCONNECT, CONTROL POWER) and drop them into any job.
Panel-shop bulk pricing
Small tags price by the square inch, so a 1 x 2 inch device tag at 1/16 inch is 2 sq in x $0.79 = $1.58 at the current provisional rate. For shops ordering every week or running the same panel in volume, contact us about a standing price.
Common questions
What are the three UL industrial control panel labels?
Most shops mean the UL listing mark, the panel nameplate with supply voltage, full load current and SCCR, and the field wiring or warning markings. We engrave the nameplate and warning plates. The listing mark comes from UL through your shop.
Do you make UL 508A nameplates?
We engrave nameplates with the data UL 508A asks for, plus device ID tags and legend plates. The UL listing mark itself comes from UL through your shop. We do not supply UL labels.
What legend plate sizes do you offer?
The builder has 22 mm and 30 mm push button legend plates, with one or two lines of text and a choice of colors and hole sizes.
Can I reorder the same job?
Yes. Save the order as a job file in the builder, open it next time, change what is different and send it.
What thickness should a control panel nameplate be?
Use 1/16 inch for device tags and legend plates. Use 1/8 inch for door nameplates and anything that will be screwed or riveted, since it stays flat and resists cracking around the holes.

Code references are to NEC 2023 (NFPA 70) unless another edition is named, reviewed on 2026-10-14. Many US jurisdictions still enforce the 2017 or 2020 NEC, and some are moving to the 2026 edition, which renumbers a few sections. Local amendments apply. Your inspector (the AHJ) and your engineer of record have the final say on wording, colors and placement.
